$15? Really?

Xbox 360's Summer of Arcade rumbled into its second week today and delivered Braid to the Masses. Basically in my opinion the game is if Super Mario World and the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time had a bit too much Shlitz one night and well you know. The game is a 2D side scroller with the ability to turn back time. Unlike the Sands of Time that limited the amount of time control you had Braid seems to let players just Michael J. Fox time as much as they want. Graphically the game looks like a painting. Actually it looks like the paintings from the film What Dreams May Come. Probably my favorite part of the game (keep in mind I have only tried the demo) is the puzzle aspect. Not really like puzzle solving but actual jigsaw puzzles. That part makes me want to plop down the Spacebucks but then I remembered that the game is $15! This goes along with a piece that will be in this weeks show. Even the game's designer isn't too thrilled about the game being 1200 points. Here's a couple excerpts from his blog:

My feeling was that Microsoft would price the game at 1200 no matter what I said; however, I never pushed them to that point. Late last week, Microsoft and I had a conversation where we talked about a bunch of issues and I agreed on the 1200 point price.

There are good reasons why I picked 1200 instead of 800 (I thought about writing them up today, but I’m not sure it’s really appropriate; I might, though, tonight. We’ll see how I feel about it later.)

The Reader’s Digest version is, I would have been perfectly happy with a launch price of 800 points. At 1200 points I am less happy, but I am okay with it.

He goes on to say that he didn't want to run into the same problem that Jeff Minter had with Space Vomit I meant Giraffe had by pricing the game too low. For the record I believe the problem Jeff Minter had was that his game sucked, that's why he only had 19K sales. Mr. Blow has made from what I have played so far a very well crafted experience. My problem is the price. That being said I'm turning into a sucker for XBLA and PSN games so I imagine I'll wind up buying it at some point. But that's because I'm dumb. All in all I think everyone should try the demo out.

I have never really gotten his decision to make a comparison to Space Giraffe. Is he trying to say that the 400 MSP price point was to blame for it's failure? That horrible game would have failed with a 4 MSP price point. I prefer Yaris over Space Giraffe, any day.

I don't think that we will ever get a full fledged, believable answer as to who is directly responsible for the 1200 point price of Braid, but I don't like it either way. It sort of goes back to the old Shadowrun argument in terms of comparable value; sure, Braid may be a good game, but when I compare it to other "good" games on XBLA and it costs 50% more, that doesn't add up to me. I don't see how a game from an indie developer, with no standard or reputation behind them, can come out with a game and charge more than the other established developers and succeed. It just doesn't make sense to me...
