Too Human

Last week Silicon Knights released a single player demo for their upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive Action/RPG. The game is a very long time in the making. Too Human was first to be released as a 4-disc game for the Playstation 1. Then was to be released on the Gamecube. But after 10 years it is finally coming to the 360.

I will start by saying I've been a long time fan of Silicon Knights since the release of The Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen for the PS1. As well as Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube. So I had high hopes going into the demo.

1. Graphics I have to admit after all the hubbub about the problems with the Unreal Engine 3 that SK was having I was hoping that they would have really gone out of their way to make the graphics something special. I noticed many of the NPC's during the cutscenes all look the same, the environments look pretty bland and empty, and the cutscenes are way below expectations based on games in this genre i.e. Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Not a dealbreaker for me because...

B. Controls  Personally I really like the controls in Too Human. Using the Right Analog Stick to essentially automatically attack enemies with melee attacks and to target them with Ranged attacks. The camera control could use some work though. I had a lot of fun taking on swarms of enemies with my trusty sword and knocking enemies into the air with a single double tap of the stick. It's definitely a system that takes getting used to. Which is much easier to do if the game has good...

3. Gameplay Personally I am a big fan of this genre. I like many Action/RPG's; X-Men Legends 1&2, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Diablo 1&2, and Titan Quest to name a few. I've always liked hack n' slash games and for me Too Human has that in spades. With the exception of having to pound on the A button over and over. In my short time with the demo I liked the automated nature of the combat, but will it be enough to keep me playing throughout the full game. I was very impressed with the amount of customization and depth of the characters skill trees and loot. Face it if an Action/RPG doesn't have a good leveling and loot system than it is a big fail in my book. Too Human has a very impressive loot system so far.

δ. Story I can't say too much about this aspect of the game at this point. I skipped the cutscenes in my playthroughs of the demo. I plan on buying Too Human on August 19th and want to save the story until I get the retail game. I will say I'm very anxious to see if Silicon Knights can make the Cyberspace Norse Mythology storyline work. Or will I just wish it had the legendary God of Thunder from Marvel Comics?

All in all I was very happy with the demo.  Basically if you like Dungeon Crawlers and aren't a graphics w***e then I recommend trying out the demo. For me though Silicon Knights has earned my $60.
