As many Xbox 360 early adopters know there wasn't really a plethora of good games to play. The Big White box did have something to satiate the needs of many hardcore gamers. Bizarre Creation's Geometry Wars Retro Evolved. This $5 diamond in the rough was a fantastic example of what Microsoft was wanting for XBLA. Now fast forward 33 months and Bizarre (no longer with MS) returns with the best downloadable sequel to date. GeoWars1 had the one game mode in two different styles. GeoWars2 packs six single player modes and a multiplayer component that I haven't gotten a chance to try out (stupid offline only). The new game modes are as follows. Deadline: A timed version of the standard game. Take what made Pac-Man Championship Edition awesome and add it to GeoWars and you've got an awesome game type. King: 3 blue circles randomly appear around the arena, only when inside the circles are you able to shoot the waves of enemies that are after you. The catch? The circles are only safe for a matter of seconds once they turn from green to red it's time to move on. Evolved: The classic mode from GeoWars1. Pacifism: A game mode created from one of the achievements from the first game. Your ship has no weapons. The only way to score points is to fly your ship through explosive gates. Very frenetic game mode. Waves: As the name implies wave after wave after wave of enemies to test your reflexes and mettle. Sequence: More of a level based system for the game. Each "room" has a set number of enemies that come in waves. You must complete each room in 30 seconds or less. A major improvement for the series is the Geoms that were introduced in Geometry Wars: Galaxies for the Wii and DS. Geoms are dropped by defeated enemies and each Geom collected adds to your multiplier total. And when you die your multiplier isn't reset. The sequel is alot easier to achieve ridiculous scores than it's predecessor. GeoWars2 also received a graphics makeover. Mostly to particle effects and enemies, but very attractive all the same. Geometry Wars 2 is the first game in Microsoft's Summer of Arcade and if the other games are even half as good then we should all be in for a treat. I can't recommend GeoWars2 enough. If you like arcade shooters then this game is a must.
