The PixelJunk team sure did get off on the wrong foot with most PS3 owners. Releasing PixelJunk Racers as their first PSN title was a complete disservice to themselves. Anywho PixelJunk has released their new PSN title, the follow up to their successful PixelJunk Monsters, PixelJunk Eden. Eden is at it's core a platformer. It just happens to be a platformer wrapped up in the style of a digital techno garden. You control a Grimp. A small little creature that clings to the plants in the environment, swings on lines of silk, collecting pollen to create new plants to explore more of the garden to eventually collect the garden's Spectra's. Each garden has a total of five Spectra's. Each playthrough of a level requires the player to collect the previous level's Spectra plus one more. The game's art style is simply a digital painting of a garden. The real gem in my opinion is the audio. As time passes the music adds layers of audio and will change during gameplay when a Spectra is collected. I will say if you're not a fan of digital music at all this isn't really a bonus. The controls are simple enough but could have been streamlined even more. When jumping from a plant if you forget to double tap the X button the Grimp will be connected to that plant by a line of silk in which you can use to swing in a full circle to gain momentum to launch the Grimp a little further. I would have probably set it up so that if the player held down the X button to use the silk, but that's just me. That being said the controls are in no way a deal breaker. A nice little touch to the game is the overworld is itself a garden you must traverse to gain access to the gardens. PixelJunk Eden also supports the Playstation Trophy system. I can't say much about the Trophies in PJE as I haven't earned any yet. All in all I really, really like the game so far. It has a very soothing, ethereal quality to it. I will definitely be revisiting PixelJunk Eden for a long time as there is a total of 50 Spectra's to collect. I find it's $10 price tag worth it as well.
