Rockstar has made a believer out of me…

I have to be honest; I have never been a huge fan of the Grand Theft Auto series. I remember playing the initial games back on the original Playstation and I always thought that it was a novel ideal but it got real old, real fast for me. When GTA3 hit the PS2 I was blown away by the technical aspect of game and what they were able to accomplish with the game, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea. The most time that I really put into the game was when I would throw in the all weapons code(s) and wreak havoc on the city… but that is it. Vice City… the same thing… and San Andreas, same thing. The games were impressive and I respected what Rockstar had technically accomplished with them but they just weren’t my cup of tea.

I should also note that the thing that bugged about the most recent GTA games (3 through San Andreas) was the fact that the game(s) seemed to rely too heavily on stereotypes to get by (in my opinion). I thought that GTA3 was just about the shock and awe of the violence and realism, Vice City was too heavily leveled in the 80’s and came off like an R rated Miami Vice, and San Andreas was a compilation of every ghetto / hood-style movie that I had ever seen. This wasn’t a bad thing; it just wasn’t something that I liked and didn’t appeal to what I wanted to play in a video game. I feared that I was going to have the same criticisms of GTA4 when I heard the initial announcement of the game. As time went on though, my interest in the game started growing simply because Rockstar was keeping so silent. I got the feeling that there was something more to this game than they previous ones and I ended up being right.

Rockstar did a phenomenal job of creating their own world and a very intriguing story with the latest GTA iteration, but I am sure that you didn’t need me to tell you that. Now I find myself looking at the previous games differently now, viewing them almost as precursors or experiments for the masterpiece that came out of GTA4. Bravo Rockstar, bravo. Thank you for creating a completely original world that stands on its own without the crutch of the mainstream media or stereotypes. Thank you for creating a game or series for that matter, that focuses more on the content and gameplay rather than the flashy graphics and putting all of your eggs into the visual basket. You have made a believer out of me and I look forward to what you will be bringing to the table in the future…
